Syllouris and Al Sisi discuss cooperation and regional security

Bilateral and multilateral cooperation as well as regional security were discussed during a meeting today between House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.

Syllouris was received by Al Sisi in the context of an official visit in Egypt.

In statements after the meeting and replying to a question as to the outcomes of the meeting, the House of Representatives President said that we discussed the geopolitical situation of the region.

The outcomes, he continued, are related to the basis of bilateral relations at an executive level and a parliamentary level and trilateral ties between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece. He said that he also briefed Al Sisi on a parliamentary summit which will take place between five countries in Nicosia, probably around the 12 and 13 June, which will include Cyprus, Greece, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq.

This development, Syllouris noted, is something the Egyptian President agrees with and supports.

Certainly, he added, we discussed matters in particular of the regional security in general, cooperation matters between our two countries and with other countries which, could form the basis for the prevalence of peace in the region.

Asked what he conclusions he has drawn from his other meetings in Cairo, the House of Representatives President said that I believe we are building, by contributing even a little bit, a cooperation which will have results.

At the same time, he expressed the view that we need to move fast. The cooperation has depth and substance but we ought to move as fast as possible, he added.

Asked what role the Greek diaspora in Egypt can play, he said it is already playing an important role because it stresses the cooperation between Egypt, Greece and Cyprus.

Syllouris also has separate meetings today with Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry.

He is accompanied by Cypriot MPs Andreas Kyprianou, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism (DISY), George Loucaides AKEL parliamentary party spokesperson and member of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Christiana Erotokritou a member of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs (DIKO) and Constantinos Efstathiou, also a member of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs (Movement of Social Democrats EDEK). Chairman of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA) Michalis Michael is also accompanying the delegation.
