Swedens Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom has sent a message of encouragement to Cypriots to seize this historic opportunity and continue the efforts to reach a political settlement in Cyprus.
She was addressing, through a video message, an event hosted by the Office of the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process, in Ledra Palace, on Wednesday, during which the religious leaders of Cyprus released a religious statement condemning all forms of violence against women and girls.
“We know that there are many difficult issues still in the Cyprus peace process,” Wallstrom said.
The negotiating parties with the facilitating of the UN SGs representatives, she added, “have achieved remarkable progress.”
“I encourage all parties, including the religious leaders, to seize this historic opportunity and continue the efforts in reaching a settlement to the benefit of women and girls and men and boys of Cyprus and for the security and prosperity of the whole region,” she concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks have been underway since May 2015 aiming to reunite the island under a federal roof.
