Spokesman confirms “an idea” on way forward in Cyprus talks has been conveyed by UN envoy

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromo confirmed on Monday that in recent days a certain idea has been conveyed by UN Secretary General’s envoy Jane Holl Lute.

The Foreign Affairs Minister has said in public and that is how things stand that in recent days a certain idea has been conveyed,, he said that an idea has been put forward by Lute and we should wait to see how developments unfold.

We have nothing else to announce on this matter, Prodromou said in statements to the press at the Presidential Palace, ahead of UN Secretary General’s report expected to be submitted to the Security Council later today.

According to the Spokesman the important thing is that the Secretary General, counts on the effort for the resumption of negotiations, for which the government is satisfied because, as he added, it is the Greek Cypriot side which truly and above anyone else has the wish for substantial negotiations to start and for the problem to be settled.

Referring to the trilateral Summit between Cyprus, Greece and Jordan yesterday, in Amman, and the presence of Iraq’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Prodromou said that arrangements are underway to promote a similar partnership with Iraq.

As was announced yesterday, he noted, a trilateral meeting at ministerial level will take place in Baghdad as well as a business forum.

He said that these are very important developments because finally Iraq’s reconstruction is the focus.

The participation of this country whether through the trilateral mechanism with Jordan or with Egypt, is very important because it shows that such cooperation mechanisms are worthy and attract other countries. Iraq, Prodromou said, is a country which has been through a lot but also it is a key country.

The Government Spokesman also said that Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades travels to China next week for an official visit, during which he will have meetings with the country’s President and the ruling communist party leadership. He added that Cyprus’ relationship is also upgraded with France.

Cyprus’ upgraded relationship with the United States shows that Cyprus has proven that despite been a small country it can play a stabilizing role in the region and through the trilateral mechanisms together with Egypt and Israel certainly the relations Cyprus can have with great powers are certainly affected.

He also pointed out that the government expects a positive stance and the support of both our European partners through the EU but also of great powers such as the US, China and Russia, with whom we always maintain a good relationship.

Referring to the participation of the United States in the trilateral mechanism between Cyprus, Greece and Israel and Iraq’s interest to also take part in such a mechanism as well as France’s interest in the trilateral meeting between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt indicates that these moves count on an international level.

He also noted that President Anastasiades tirelessly invests in those powers which can create the conditions for progress on the Cyprus problem and added that Turkey’s provocative stance in wanting to maintain Cyprus under its control if not under occupation, shows precisely that Cyprus should somehow try to counter this by alternative means.

According to the Spokesman European, American, Israeli and other interests are right now converging with the Republic of Cyprus’ interests and the defence of its sovereign rights.

Diplomacy has created a grid around Cyprus, of which our small country, could be the axis, something which we believe is valuable and could prove to act as a catalyst in order for us to better seek justice for the people of Cyprus in the Cyprus problem itself., he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
