Spokesman completes visit to Israel

Issues that concern the Republic of Cyprus strategic cooperation with Israel, with special emphasis on defence, security and energy issues, were examined during Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides visit to Israel which was completed on Friday.

A statement by the PIO said that the two sides observed that cooperation between the two countries in bilateral issues has delivered results and it should be further strengthened through specific actions, most of which are already underway.

On his part, the Government Spokesman said they discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and the talks for a comprehensive settlement that will resume next Tuesday after a two-month lull.

The discussions highlighted the need to secure and strengthen the role of Cyprus as a reliable partner in the region, within the framework of a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

During his visit, Christodoulides met with Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Energy, ?uval Steinitz, the Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yuval Rotem, Deputy Minister for Diplomacy Dr Michael Oren, Political Director of Israels MFA Ambassador Alon Ushpiz and Chief of Staff at the PMs office Yoav Horowitz.

There was also an exchange of views on the role which the EU can play in the region and the significance of the EU-Israel relations and how Cyprus can contribute through its EU membership.

They also examined the increased interest on the part of the new US Administration as regards to developments in the Middle East and how Cyprus and Israel play a role of stability and security pillars in the region.

There was also an extensive discussion on regional issues such as the situation in Syria, the forthcoming referendum in Turkey and how to handle terrorism.
