Spokesman and UN dismiss reports about abolishing Republic of Cyprus

Any attempt to abolish the Republic of Cyprus is a non-issue, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides told CNA on Tuesday, pointing out that the political settlement being pursued since 1977 provides for the evolution of the internal structure of the Republic from a unified to a federal state. Furthermore, UN Spokesperson in Cyprus Aleem Siddique told CNA that speculation that the UN is proposing in the common document on security and guarantees “a new Treaty of Establishment which would abolish the Republic of Cyprus is groundless and fundamentally wrong.”
