Spehar holds separate meetings with leaders

UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar will hold on Friday separate meetings with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

The renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate and Jane Hall Lute’s forthcoming visit after the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres asked her to conduct consultations with all parties to the Conference on Cyprus are the issues expected to be on the agenda of the meetings.

Spehar’s meeting with Anastasiades is scheduled to take place at 0930 local time and with Akinci at 1230.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

The latest round of UN-peace talks, last year, at the Swiss resort of Crans – Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.
