Spehar and Ambassadors take the “panel pledge” for greater gender equality

Elisabeth Spehar, the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), and foreign Ambassadors in Cyprus pledged on Friday to only take part in gender balanced discussion panels, in a bid to bring about greater gender equality.

Spehar, together with the Ambassadors of Germany, Franz Josef Kremp, and Finland, Timo Heino, also commented Australia’s High Commission for initiating the panel pledge. I pledge as Head of UNFICYP to only be a part of gender balanced panels. I also pledge to encourage my male colleagues in the UN to participate in more panels that have to do with gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment says Spehar in a video message on twitter, where she appears together with the Ambassadors.

On his part, Kremp pledges that he will not accept invitations to participate in, to speak at or to attend events, unless serious efforts are made to ensure gender balance. Finally, Heino pledges to do everything he can to bring about more gender balance and diversity to panels and occasions he is organizing or attending.

Australia’s High Commissioner Sam Beever commented the three for taking the panel pledge in support of gender equality.
