Speech by the Presidential Commissioner Mr Photis Photiou on the occasion of the National Day of Brazil

I am delighted to be here with you tonight at this auspicious occasion to celebrate the National Say of Brazil.

On this occasion, we join our Brazilian friends to honour the foundation of a great country. Almost two centuries of independence, Brazil, home to over 200 million people, grew to be a strong country, known for its abundant natural heritage and resources. Brazil is now one of the most important global players in international affairs.

I would like to congratulate Brazil for organizing and hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games and extend my appreciation for hosting the Cyprus delegation along with others to the Games. Visitors from around the world enjoyed the astonishing natural beauty of Brazil, especially the city of Rio de Janeiro, during the period of the Games.

Despite our geographic distance, Cyprus and Brazil enjoy excellent bilateral relations based primarily on our shared values for the respect of universal values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

Brazil has always been a great friend of Cyprus. I wish to express my appreciation for the principled stance of your country regarding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus question, on the basis of relevant Security Council Resolutions.

We are also grateful for Brazil’s long-standing contribution to UNFICYP, which has now been ongoing for more than 20 years.

For the last decade our relations have been consolidated with the opening of Embassies in both Brazilia and Nicosia; a decision, which reflects upon our will to build on the common links that we have already nurtured.

It is our wish to continue strengthening these ties and expand our cooperation with Brazil for the mutual benefit of our peoples.

With this, I wish to raise my glass to the good health and prosperity of our two countries and peoples.
