Speaker Syllouris to take part in the Parliamentary Assembly for the Union of the Mediterranean

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris departs for Strasbourg on Tuesday to take part in the 15th Parliamentary Assembly for the Union of the Mediterranean on the 13th and 14th of February 2019.

The European Parliament Presidency has set the thematic focus of this plenary session on migration and refugees.

Syllouris will be accompanied by members of the House Andreas Kyprianou, Costas Costa and George Procopiou.

The assembly will start with the 6th Speakers’ Summit and a welcoming address by Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament and of the PA-UfM, according to the PA-UfM website.

There will also be an address by Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, Citizenship followed by the adoption of the Summit Declaration.

The 15th plenary session will follow with Inaugural words from President Tajani and addresses by the UfM co-Chairs and by the UfM Secretary General.

On the next day, participants will discuss the challenges of migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean with presentations by Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the UfM, Sophie Magennis, representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Manfred Profazi, representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The plenary concludes with the handover of the PA-UfM presidency to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
