The South African Parliament has urged all members of the public to exercise caution when reading bogus online satirical blogs after false online claims had circulated that the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee for Internal Arrangements, Thoko Didiza, had died.
On Friday, an online satirical blog falsely reported that police had confirmed Didiza was stabbed to death at her Durban home while on holiday.
Earlier, another blog falsely reported that she had escaped death after her car was shot at.
The National Assembly (lower house of Parliament) said in a statement here Wednesday that it was appalled by these false claims and assured that Didiza is alive and well at her Pretoria home.
“Parliament urges all to exercise caution when reading these bogus online satirical blogs as they publish malicious information without any care to exercise the normal journalistic checks and balances of verifying information before it is published,” the National Assembly said.
