Socialist EDEK decides to run alone in next European elections

The President of the Socialist Party EDEK Marinos Sizopoulos appeared on Sunday confident that the party can and should win the 5th place, in the European Parliament elections, due next May.

EDEK’s Pancyprian Conference approved today in Nicosia the party’s Political Bureau proposal to run alone in the elections. Diomides Diomidous, Christos Iacovou, Natasa Ioannou, Elias Myrianthous, Thea Nicolaou and Demetris Papadakis are the six candidates on EDEK’s ballot, which was today presented officially.

EDEK President Marinos Sizopoulos called on people to answer those who try to silence EDEK’s voice with their votes, proving that the party remains strong. The next European elections are a decisive electoral battle and their result will define the future said Sizopoulos.

This battle will either consolidate EDEK as the 4th largest parliamentary party or it will bring about fresh turmoil, he said.

Speaking about previous efforts to reach an understanding with other political parties ahead of the European elections, which ended inconclusively, the President of EDEK said that our friends wrongly thought that EDEK is in a difficult position.

He said finally that mistakes have been made and there were omissions, but this is not the time for a blame game. Through unity and dynamism, we need to answer those who question EDEK and try to silence a patriotic and democratic voice.

European elections are set to take place in all EU countries from 23 to 26 May, 2019. Citizens casting their vote will choose the 705 members to represent them in the European Parliament until 2024. In Cyprus the European elections will take place on May 26. Cyprus elects six MEPs.
