Severe Material Deprivation index in Cyprus down to 11.7% in 2017

The percentage of the population in Cyprus that were severely materially deprived (SMD index) declined to 11.7% in 2017, continued its downward trajectory since the peak of 2013, according to provisional figures released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

According to a Survey carried out by Cystat the SMD index peaked in 2013 reaching 16.1% and has been falling since.

Although Cyprus’ SMD index is approximately double of the EU index of 6.7% in 2017, Cyprus was among the countries with the highest percentage reduction. Cyprus registered the fourth largest reduction (1.9%) after Romania, Italy and Croatia, with a reduction of 4.4%, 2.9%, and 2.2 respectively.
