Serbian officials express Belgrade’s principled stance on Cyprus issue

A delegation of the Cyprus-Serbia Friendship Group in the House of Representatives is paying Serbia a two-day official visit at the invitation of President of the Serbia-Cyprus Friendship Group in the Serbian National Assembly, Biljana Pantic Pilja. During the meetings, Serbian officials reaffirmed Belgrade’s principled position for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. According to a press release by the House of Representatives, the Cyprus delegation includes Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Chairman of the Cyprus-Serbia Friendship Group Harris Georgiades and Committee Members Marios Mavrides, George Loukaides, George Koukoumas and Christos Orphanides. The delegation was received on Wednesday by President of the National Assembly of Serbia Dr. Vladimir Orlic and had separate meetings with President of the Serbia-Cyprus Friendship Group Pantic Pilja and Members of the Friendship Group, President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Borko Stefanovic and Vice-President of the Committee of European Integration Dubravka Filipovski and Members of the two Committees. During the meetings, both sides underlined the close relations between Cyprus and Serbia and their peoples which are based on the long historical ties of the two countries and mutual support between them in matters of great importance for each country. The Cypriot MPs reaffirmed the firm support of Cyprus to Serbia, on the basis of principles, both on its accession path to the European Union as well as on the issue of Kosovo. The Cypriot delegation thanked Serbia for its principled stance on the Cyprus problem and underlined the Greek Cypriot side’s commitment to resuming the Cyprus talks with the aim to reach a solution in accordance with international law, the relevant UN resolutions and European principles and values. The Serbian officials reaffirmed Serbia’s principled position for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. They also underlined that Serbia’s accession to the European Union is a strategic goal. Finally, the two sides expressed their readiness to further strengthen their relations, emphasising on the fields of investments, tourism, education and culture.
