Serbia firmly support efforts for a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, new Ambassador says

The new Ambassador of Serbia in Nicosia Marko Blagojevic has expressed the firm support of the Government and people of his country in reaching a fair and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

Serbian Ambassador stressed that the solution should be mutually and freely agreed by both communities on the island and based on the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and EU acquis.

Presenting his credentials to the President Nicos Anastasiades during a formal ceremony held today at the Presidential Palace, Marko Blagojevic conveyed the warmest greetings and best wishes of the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic to the Government and people of Cyprus.

He thanked Cyprus for its support to his country and expressed the hope that the overall good relations between the two countries would even grow stronger in the upcoming period.

He specifically thanked for Cyprus’ support to the efforts made by Serbia on its path to become a part of larger European family and a full member of the European Union.

Our nations shared rather similar experiences through the years and faced similar problems regarding the respect of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country, fighting for the full implementation of standards and principles of international law, he noted.

He also thanked for the support of Cyprus to Serbia in finding a solution for the Kosovo and Metohija question.

He went on to say that our commonly shared values made it easier for our leaders to cement Serb-Cypriot mutual backing that has been proven in the times of need. I would specifically underline our shared fate and respect for traditional culture deriving from Hellenism and Byzantine empire. Orthodox Christianity made an eternal imprint on both nations giving birth to virtues we profoundly respect and which are impregnated in the very essence of our lives and goals.

He finally assured the President that he will make every effort to further enhance the traditionally friendly relations and cooperation in all the fields between Cyprus and Serbia to the benefit of the two countries and peoples.

Receiving the credentials, President Anastasiades firstly congratulated him for his appointment assuring him at the same time that his Government and he personally will provide him with every assistance necessary in the performance of his high duties.

Our countries enjoy an excellent level of bilateral relations already, but I am most certain that we can reinforce and expand even further these relations, to the benefit of both our countries, he added.

Cyprus is and will remain, he noted, an advocate for the European perspective of the Western Balkans. In this respect, he congratulated the Government of Serbia for the progress it has achieved in its accession negotiations expressing his wishes for every success in the efforts for completing these negotiations successfully. Cyprus looks forward to welcoming Serbia in the European Union family, as he said.

President conveyed to the Government and the people of Serbia his warmest greetings and a message of sincere friendship and solidarity.

He concluded by assuring the new Ambassador of the support of the Government to his valuable mission, so that your tenure will be highly constructive and fruitful, and carried out in such a way that the genuine relationship that Cyprus enjoys with Serbia will further flourish.
