Senator says US has strong interest in Cyprus’ reunification

Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, US Senator Roger Wicker has said that the US has a strong interest in the reunification of Cyprus.

Wicker, who is also head of the US delegation, said that the US expect a resumption of the Cyprus talks after the meeting between President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, which will take place next week.

A press release by the House of Representatives says that during a meeting in the framework of OSCE PA in Vienna, the senator asked for the immediate resumption of the talks and referred to his recent working visit to Cyprus and his meetings with the two leaders.

He also spoke about the tragic fact of monuments collapsing in the buffer zone in Cyprus.

Head of the Cyprus Parliament delegation, MP Irene Charalampidou, thanked the US senator for his reference to the Cyprus problem and said that the Greek Cypriot sides wish is the immediate resumption of the Cyprus talks on the basis of the UNSGs framework (Guterres Framework).

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
