Russian journalist deported from Cyprus following arrest

A Russian journalist has been deported from Cyprus after being arrested in Nicosia last Thursday, following the revocation of his residence permit for security reasons, sources told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA). The journalist was accompanied by a second individual who was subsequently released. According to the same sources, the Russian journalist resisted arrest during the incident. Simultaneously, the sources dismissed allegations of violent behaviour from the authorities during his arrest. It was also said that the Republic of Cyprus, has informed the Russian side about the matter and is in communication with Russian authorities at the appropriate diplomatic level with the aim of resolving the issue optimally. Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Open Communication Line with Russia —————————————————– Furthermore, replying to a CNA question, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Gotsis, confirmed that the Ministry was taking the necessary actions foreseen for such unique cases. Gotsis pointed out that there’s an open communication line with the Russian Federation through diplomatic channels with the goal of resolving the issue in the best possible way. He underscored that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “can assure that the matter is being handled with due care and attention by the competent state services and its resolution is already in progress following the appropriate procedures.” In conclusion, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Republic of Cyprus, as a coordinated state, ‘takes all necessary measures to protect its national security and implement decisions of the competent authorities for the protection of its interests.’
