Russian Deputy FM to hold political consultations in Nicosia on December 14

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko will hold political consultations in Nicosia on December 14.

CNA has learned that Groushko, who is responsible for the relations of Russia with European countries, European cooperation, interaction with the EU, the OSCE, NATO and the Council of Europe, will hold a meeting with Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, with whom he is expected to discuss about a meeting the Cypriot FM will hold with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, most probably next month, in Moscow.

Christodoulides and Lavrov had a telephone conversation on Wednesday during which they agreed to meet “in the coming months”. During their telephone conversation, the two Foreign Ministers reviewed the bilateral relations of Cyprus and Russia and exchanged views on possible ways of further enhancing them. They also discussed recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region and matters which have to do with the EU – Russia relations.

On December 14, Grushko will also head a Russian delegation that will hold political consultations with a delegation of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry headed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Minas Hadjimichael. CNA has learned that the two delegations will hold consultations on the two countries’ bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem, regional and international issues as well as EU Russia relations.

Groushko’s visit to Cyprus has been scheduled long before the statements made by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Maria Zakharova who said that Moscow will have to take response measures in the case of a military buildup by the US in Cyprus.

Following Zakharova’s statement, the Cyprus government has made it clear that it does not seek the militarization of Cyprus and that it provides facilities to other countries for humanitarian operations on the basis of requests, relevant agreements or MoUs.
