Remarks by the President of the Republic following the parade for the Day of Independence of the Republic of Cyprus

What is needed is to fortify ourselves with courage in order to find the ways and the road toward peace, said the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, today.

In his remarks to reporters, following the parade in Nicosia on the occasion of the Day of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus, the President of the Republic stated the following:

“I want first to express my satisfaction for the sense of pride that the National Guard has given us through the impeccable planning as well as through the exceptional demonstration of skills during the parade.

I want to congratulate warmly the Commander of the National Guard, his General Staff, and the officers of the various Arms.

At the same time, I want to wish to all the people of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Happy Anniversary on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus.

The message I want to convey to everybody is the following: what is needed is to focus our attention not on defensive or any other planning or military equipment, but to fortify ourselves with courage so that we will find the ways and the road towards peace, and, through the evolution (of the Republic of Cyprus), to create those conditions so that all the people, away from any of the burdens of the past, will live together in a modern state that will absolutely respect the values and principles of the European Union, the values and principles of the United Nations.

Only through peace we can hope for better days to come.

I wish once again a Happy Anniversary and all the best to the people of Cyprus.”
