Remarks by the President of the Republic after the meeting with the T/C leader, yesterday

On the one hand, it is not possible for us to be talking about confidence building measures and on the other hand to have all these provocations by Turkey, said the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades tonight.

In his remarks to reporters at the Presidential Palace following his return from the site where the talks on the Cyprus problem are taking place and when asked about his meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, the President said that the atmosphere was good. We have been briefed by the interlocutors on the work done so far, which will also continue tomorrow.

Of course the atmosphere alone is not enough; the essence is to have results. Differences remain and therefore I do not want to create impressions which cause either optimism or pessimism.

I want to hope that at some point we will all realize that it is truly necessary to comprehend the concerns as they are also expressed by the Greek Cypriot community.

Replying to a question whether at the meeting tonight he raised the issue of Turkey’s provocations that continue to increase, the President said certainly and I said that this does not do any good and does not create the atmosphere we would like to have. And it is not possible, on the one hand, for us to be talking about confidence building measures and on the other hand to have all these provocations on the part of Turkey.
