I am very happy to be here to address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in the framework of the 5th Chairmanship of Cyprus of the Committee of Ministers.
I have just had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Jagland, to whom I expressed my most sincere appreciation for the Council of Europe’s work in advancing our common values and principles.
I have underlined the commitment of the Cypriot Chairmanship to place emphasis on the challenges which we face in enhancing the democratic security of Europe and promoting co-operation among all member states.
During my meeting this morning with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Mr Agramunt, I congratulated him on his important initiative, the #NoHate#NoFear Campaign, in response to the continuing attacks against European societies and the way of life in Europe.
I have also had the opportunity to update the Secretary General and the President on the ongoing negotiations to find a just, comprehensive, and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, one that is fully in line with EU law, values and principles.
It is my firm belief, as I have explained to my interlocutors, that if we succeed in our efforts, we will bequeath our children a reunited European homeland where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, under conditions of peace and stability, will feel not only safe but also proud, a demonstration of the will to unite in times of fracture and division.
Please allow me, on this occasion, to express publicly my deep appreciation towards both organizations and their staff for their dedicated work in further promoting our shared values and principles, and in strengthening the democracy and the political freedoms of our citizens.
