Remarks by the Government Spokesman after the meeting of the President of the Republic with the Greek Prime Minister, in Athens

Today’s meeting of the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, and the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr Alexis Tsipras, was substantive, creative and constructive, the Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said.

Speaking to journalists after the end of the meeting, Mr Christodoulides said that, at the meeting, very specific decisions were taken, which will be promoted through the assumption of joint actions, both in European and international level. He noted that there was an absolute understanding on issues of substance, as well as of process.

The common goal, through the initiatives assumed, is to terminate the occupation and to reunify Cyprus in a contemporary European state, without foreign guarantees and occupation troops, the Government Spokesman stressed.

In a question regarding the joint actions, Mr Christodoulides said that, in European level, both the President of the Republic and the Greek Prime Minister will hold contacts with the Heads of the EU institutional bodies. Also, he referred to the upcoming visit of the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs to New York and the meetings of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus with EU officials. The goal, he said, is to promote these very specific decisions taken during today’s meeting.

Finally, invited to say whether the date was set for the meeting of Mr Tsipras with the Turkish President, the Government Spokesman said that at the time being, no date was set for such a meeting.
