Recent recoveries at Committee of Missing Persons excavations

On 29 June, a Committee of Missing Persons excavation team located the remains of at least one individual in a military area in Deryneia/Derinya.

According to a press release by the CMP, its bi-communal excavation teams are continuing excavations at Voni/GAlkhan, Bogazi/Bogaz and Kontemenos/ Kilicarslan which are within military areas, and at Kioneli/GAlnyeli, Agia Irini/Akdeniz, Galateia/Mehmetcik, Neo Chorio Kythreas/MinerelikAly and Mari/Tatlisu village at Larnaka District.

‘The CMP would like to reiterate its warmest sympathy to the families of the missing persons and make a plea, once again, to the people of the island to support the Committee’s efforts by calling and providing information regarding the missing persons’ the press release notes.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Since then, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown. A Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) was established, upon agreement between the leaders of the island’s two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives.
