Procedures in place for blind people and persons with physical disabilities to be able to vote

Blind or physically disabled persons can vote by themselves, if they declare to the presiding officer that they are able to do so, according to the electoral law, the Chief Returning Officer has said.

In a press release, he notes that voters who, due to blindness or other physical incapacity, cannot vote by themselves, may also request the presiding officer to assist them in exercising their right to vote, according to their wish, in the presence of one of the assistant employees of the polling station.

Blind or physically disabled persons may also, if they wish, ask any other person of their absolute confidence to vote on their behalf, without the intervention of any other person.

In addition, it is noted that the presiding officer may explain the voting procedure to a disabled, incapacitated or illiterate voter, carefully avoiding any action that may be taken as advice or instruction in favour of a particular candidate.
