The University of Nicosia participates in the European Research Project Erasmus+, Geo-CLIC (Geoinformatics Climate Change, https://geoclic.be/), which aims to contribute to the reversal of climate change and the return of the global climate to a more sustainable level through the use of geoinformatics technology and the utilization of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing to analyse available information, data, draw useful conclusions and adopt the necessary policy changes.
The project is coordinated by the Free University of Brussels (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), while partners in the project in addition to the University of Nicosia are the Technical University of Valencia (Universitat Politècnica de València), the University of Zagreb (Sveucilište u Zagrebu) a
nd the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf). The coordination of the project at the University of Nicosia is carried out by the Rector, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, assisted by the Senior Administrator to the Rectorate, Mr Kyriakos E. Georgiou.
As part of the project, during the week of February 05 – 09 2024, students from all participating universities attended a winter school on Climate Smart Agriculture, at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture. The lectures and hands-on workshops included, among others, subjects in Challenges Faced in Agriculture due to Climate Change, Remote Sensing Applications in Agriculture, GIS Applications in Agriculture and Derivation of Soil Erosion Risk Map.
The University of Nicosia was represented by:
(a) Alisa Illarionova, undergraduate student – Data Science
(b) Stefania Germena, undergraduate student – Mechanical Engineering
(c) Andreas Kyriakides, postgraduate student – Data Science

ISTANBUL: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday responded to remarks by his US counterpart Joe Biden, who called him a “crazy SOB” a day earlier, saying the comment showed why he is a “more preferable” American leader for Moscow.
“I said that we will work with any president, but I believe that for us, for Russia, Biden is more preferable. And judging by what he just said, I am absolutely right, because this is an adequate reaction to what was said on my part,” Putin told a Russian journalist in response to a question on the matter.
Putin said that, conversely, he has not been as helpful to Biden, who he said could not tell him, “Volodya, well done, thank you, you’ve helped me a lot.”
“We understand what is happening there from an internal political point of view, and this reaction is absolutely adequate, which means I was right,” he added.
Putin’s comments came after Biden called Putin “a crazy SOB” on Wednesday at a fundraising event in California for his reelection campaign.
“This is the last ex
istential threat, it is climate. We have a crazy SOB like that guy Putin, and others, and we always have to worry about nuclear conflict, but the existential threat to humanity is climate,” Biden said while speaking at the gathering in San Francisco.
The statement received criticism from high-ranking Russian officials, including Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who called Biden’s remarks a “huge shame” to America and his behavior “in the style of a Hollywood cowboy for the sake of domestic political interests.”
