President’s position on solution we seek is firm and unchanged, Spokesman says

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades position as regards the form of the solution we seek in Cyprus is firm and has not changed, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has stressed.

In a written statement issued on Saturday, as a reply to an announcement by the left – wing AKEL party, the Spokesman said that “the position of the Greek Cypriot side and of President Anastasiades as regards the form of the solution we seek, which is determined by the UN Resolutions and Decisions is firm, has not changed and is tabled in the most formal way at the negotiations, before the UN. and elsewhere”.

Prodromou noted that the UNSG in his report on Cyprus expresses concern for the fact that since the talks in Crans Montana (July 2017) a year has passed without any negotiations, adding that the fact that the Turkish Cypriot sides position and possibility to participate in the negotiations depends on the developments in Turkey, is indeed a big problem at the negotiations.

The Turkish occupation of Cyprus, he stressed, “is illegal and can not constitute a state. The negotiations are being held so as to give an end to the occupation”.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. A UN-backed Conference on Cyprus last summer in the Swiss resort of Crans Montana, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof, ended inconclusively.
