President urges everyone to focus on vision of Cyprus reunification

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades pledged once again that he will do his utmost to reach a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, one that will stand the test of time and will give people prospect.

Speaking on Tuesday evening, during the annual General Assembly of Invest Cyprus, the President called on everyone to focus on the greater vision of the reunification of the island, adding that the solution will significantly contribute to a more stable and prosperous environment.

The President said that everyone should realise that it is not to our interest to have an environment of discord, especially when we are aware of the positions of the other side.

President Anastasiades pointed out that if the solution provides for a state that is not functional, the people will not accept it. He also added that some should ask themselves what the consequences will be if our side accepts the continuation of Turkish guarantees and occupying forces or the right to a positive vote at the central government. He also went on to say that the abolition of guarantees, will create the prospects to have a modern European state.

The President also said that by creating the prospects for a viable and functional state we serve not only the interests of the Greek Cypriots but the ones of the Turkish Cypriots as well. He said that we do not deny the Turkish Cypriots the right to feel secure and safe but what is of utmost importance, is for the state to be functional and to provide the prospects for cooperation between the two communities.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-backed negotiations with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof ended inconclusively in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana.
