President to speak Sunday with UN envoy to arrange Nicosia meeting

Deliberations are underway to set the date for a meeting in Nicosia between Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and UN Secretary-General’s envoy Jane Holl Lute, CNA learns. President Anastasiades is expected to have a telephone conversation with Lute on Sunday.

The UN envoy’s forthcoming visit to Cyprus, in a bid to agree the terms of reference for the resumption of settlement talks, is expected to take place early in February.

The office of the Turkish Cypriot leader announced earlier today that Lute had a telephone conversation in the afternoon with Mustafa Akinci and asked to meet with him. The meeting was set for February 3, according to the announcement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
