President tells EU diplomats he is ready to resume Cyprus talks

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades reiterated his readiness to immediately resume talks, reaffirming at the same time the position of the Greek Cypriot side to continue efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The President was speaking during a lunch on Tuesday hosted by the Embassy of Malta on the occasion of the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU, which was attended by EU ambassadors in Nicosia.

According to a press release issued by the PIO, the President briefed the ambassadors on the current state of the Cyprus talks and the position of principle which the Greek Cypriot side maintains for a solution within the agreed framework.

He also said that a solution should be based on EU principles and values and the acquis communautaire.

President Anastasiades referred to the priorities of the Matlese presidency, noting the Republic of Cyprus shares the same concerns and vision.

He also underlined the challenges that Europe is facing, noting the three elements of fundamental significance in the effort to overcome the obstacles facing the EU which are democracy, unity and solidarity.
