President Sisi voices support for Nicosia during telephone conversation with Cypriot counterpart

Nicosia secured on Wednesday Egyptian President’s support, as the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades informed Abdel Fattah el-Sisi about developments regarding the latest round of settlement talks.

In statements at the Presidential Palace, Deputy Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said today that the two men had a long telephone conversation earlier, during which the President of Cyprus explained in detail to his interlocutor last week’s developments at the Conference on Cyprus, that took place in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

President Anastasiades reiterated his readiness and political will to continue with efforts for a Cyprus settlement, within the framework and the parameters set by the UN Secretary General, said Papadopoulos.

According to the Deputy Spokesman, Sisi pointed out that he stands by the Republic of Cyprus, also in the framework of the forthcoming Presidency of the UN Security Council by his country, from August to December, 2017.

Papadopoulos said finally that Sisi accepted an invitation by the President of Cyprus for a bilateral meeting in Nicosia, the day before the next Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Trilateral Summit, that will take place this autumn.

UN-backed talks that took place between June 28-July 7, in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended inconclusively. Peace talks aim to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, under a federal roof.
