President presents awards to Cypriot Winter Special Olympics athletes

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades presented awards to the Cypriot athletes who participated in the Winter Special Olympics in Austria last March.

A total of 2,700 athletes from 107 countries participated in the games, including Cyprus with 72 athletes, who secured first place in floorball and fourth place in floor hockey.

Addressing the event at the Presidential Palace, President Anastasiades said that the athletes and their escorts were champions of life, sending a message of hope to everyone, reminding them of the true meaning of sportsmanship, through a sporting event in which everyone is a winner.

The President said the Cypriot team filled everyone with pride and congratulated the athletes and their coaches and escorts for their hard work and achievements.

He assured that the state would always support persons with special abilities, creating the conditions for the safety and confidence they and their parents need.

The President referred to a structured plan for cooperation with and support towards the Cyprus Special Olympics Federation, as well as arrangements in schools for athletes needing special training.

He also said the athletes of the Special Olympics, their escorts, their parents, and all the volunteers, are a unique source of inspiration, as well as proof that those who try with all their heart can overcome any obstacle, and achieve any goal.
