President pays tribute to former Indian UNFICYP Commander

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades honored posthumous Indian Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Dean Premchamd, who served in Cyprus in the period 1969-1976.

At a special ceremony that took place in New Delhi on Thursday, where the President pays a state visit, President Anastasiades awarded the son of the former UNFICYP Commander Sushil Premchamd with silver emblems of the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking at the event, according to PIO, the President said that during the Turkish invasion against Cyprus in 1974, Dean Premchamd made tremendous efforts to protect Cypriots, to provide humanitarian assistance and information about the missing persons.

With genuine dedication to humanitarian principles and to peace, he accomplished his very difficult task in adverse conditions” , he added.

Receiving the award, Sushil Premchamd, warmly thanked the President for the honor and said that his family will always have very close relations with Cyprus.

Although Cyprus is a small country compared to its neighbors, it is placed much higher as regards kindness and generosity, he concluded.
