President holds telephone conversation with UN envoy

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, has had a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary Generals special envoy Jane Holl Lute, Government Spokesman, Prodromos Prodromou said on Friday, after a meeting of the National Council.

Prodromou said that the President informed the members of the National Council about his telephone conversation with Lute and how deliberations aiming to formulate the terms of reference, are evolving.

Moreover he noted that the President informed the members of the Council about his recent meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and the various issues that they discussed during their meeting.

A discussion followed, views and evaluations were expressed. It was a creative and constructive meeting of the National Council, Prodromou said.

Responding to questions about Anastasiades’ telephone conversation with Lute, Prodromou reiterated that an effort is underway, with a view to formulate the terms of reference, that should be based on the parameters which the UN Secretary General had proposed.

The President informed the members of Council about his contact with Lute that took place during the last days, he added.

Asked if there is any information about Lute’s visit to Ankara, Prodromou said that they dont have any such information.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
