President begins the meeting with Akinci “with the best intentions”

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, has said he is going to the meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, with the best of intentions.

The meeting began at 1000 local time at the residence of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, who is also attending it. According to information, it is expected that the two leaders will also have the opportunity for a tete-a-tete discussion.

Asked upon his departure from the Presidential Palace about his expectations from the meeting, Anastasiades said it is not a matter of expectations, but a matter of determination.

I am going to the meeting with the best of intentions, with a view to look into the climate that needs to be cultivated and the conditions that need to pre-exist or jointly be shaped, for the resumption of a constructive dialogue that will lead us to a functional settlement, he noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
