President Anastasiades undertakes initiatives aiming at promoting stability in Lebanon, spokesman says

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday that President Nicos Anastasiades is undertaking initiatives aiming at promoting stability in Lebanon, following his meeting on Tuesday evening, in Cyprus, with the Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri.

Referring to Anastasiades meeting with Hariri, the spokesman said that yesterday Hariris diplomatic office contacted the Cyprus government and informed them that Hariri wanted to meet Anastasiades. In this framework a meeting was arranged and took place last night, he added, noting that it lasted for 45 minutes and that a very substantive discussion took place.

Christodoulides said it was particularly important that Hariri chose to visit France, Egypt and the Republic of Cyprus before returning to Lebanon, adding that their common goal is to achieve stability in Lebanon and the region. He noted that in this framework following yesterdays meeting, President Anastaiades will undertake some initiatives to achieve this common goal.

The spokesman highlighted the fact that the Republic of Cyprus is an EU member states and has also excellent relations with all neighbouring countries “something which is recognized and gives us the potential to work with a a view to achieve stability in Lebanon” which affects the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Asked if Anastasiades will visit Lebanon or Saudi Arabia, the spokesman said that the President had telephone conversations with foreign leaders on the issue of Lebanon. Furthermore, he announced that Anastasiades received an invitation to visit Saudi Arabia and said that consultations are taking place at the diplomatic level to determine specific dates for this visit, which may take place before the end of the year.

To a remark about the importance of developments in Lebanon in relation to the energy sector, the spokesman said that this is true not only for the energy sector but also for security in the region. He said that these issues were discussed thoroughly on Tuesday in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister and the President of Egypt, who attended the Trilateral Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Summit that took place in Nicosia .

He also recalled that before coming to Cyprus Hariri had a long meeting with the President of Egypt with whom he discussed issues concerning the need for stability in the region.
