President Anastasiades travels to London to attend “Celebration for Cyprus” at Buckingham Palace

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, travels on Sunday to London where, on Monday evening, he will attend “Celebration for Cyprus,” a special event in honour of Cyprus organized by Buckingham Palace, in the framework of the Commonwealth.

On Tuesday afternoon President Anastasiades will hold a meeting with the British Prime Minister Theresa May, while on Sunday evening he will be meeting with members of the Cypriot community in the UK.

In statements to CNA on Saturday, Government Spokesman, Prodromos Prodromou, said that the discussion between Anastasiades and May will focus on Brexit, with special reference to the issues related to the relations between Cyprus and the UK.

The spokesman said that the President will also have the opportunity to discuss the Cyprus problem with May and the initiative which is underway and which he fully supports and works so that it will bear fruit, so that substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem will resume from the point they were left in July 2017.

“The discussion with the British government, which had a constructive position regarding the replacement of the obsolete guarantees system with a modern security system that would exclude any foreign interventions, as proposed by the UN Secretary General in one of the parameters as part of a negotiating framework in Crans Montana, is significant,” the spokesman noted.

According to a press release issued by the Cypriot Presidency in addition to the special ceremony in honour of Cyprus, at Buckingham Palace, which will be addressed by the President of the Republic and Prince Charles of Wales, the event includes an exhibition of archaeological artifacts from Cyprus, an exhibition of old authentic maps of Cyprus, and a thematic exhibition with regard to university and academic cooperation.

On the occasion of his visit to London, the President of the Republic will meet, on the morning of March 5, with Prince Charles of Wales, and with Prince William Duke of Cambridge. In the afternoon, on the same day, the President will meet with the Prime Minister May.

On March 6, the President will meet with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

The President of the Republic, who will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulides, the Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou, the Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou, and by his spouse Andri Anastasiades, will return to Cyprus on 6 March.
