President Anastasiades presents overseas Cypriots with medals for outstanding service

Teacher Andria Zafeirakos, restaurant owner Andreas Mavrommatis and scientist Kypros Nicolaides were presented on Thursday with medals for outstanding service to their home country. The medals were presented by President Nicos Anastasiades during a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace.

Andria Zafeirakos is the 2018 Global Teacher Prize winner; she is an Arts and Textiles teacher at Alperton Community School in northwest London, England. Andreas Mavrommatis is a chef and owner of the renowned restaurant Mavrommatis in Paris, awarded with the Michelin Star. Doctor Kypros Nicolaides is one of the pioneers of fetal medicine and his discoveries are considered to have revolutionised fetal medicine.

In his speech President Anastasiades said that Dr Nicolaides acclaimed work in the field of medicine, Mavrommatis service in the catering industry and Zafeirakos work in education, honour our country and upgrades our diasporas reputation and prestige.

He said that the awards are presented as a token of appreciation to these three world acclaimed Cypriots. The President referred to the overall service of all the overseas Cypriots, saying that they honour our country and contribute in keeping alive their culture, religion, traditions and language.

He also made special reference to their struggles for the reunification of our country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, saying that they are the best ambassadors abroad.

The President also underlined the fact that this year, 120 young Cypriots are participating in the Conferences of the Overseas Cypriots, saying that although they were born abroad, they fight with all their power for the rights of their home country and they promote the Cyprus tradition, culture and language.

The overseas Cypriots contribution and service was also praised by Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou who said that their struggle is consistent, determined and tireless.
