President Anastasiades meets today with the Turkish Cypriot leader

The President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci meet on Friday at the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia.

According to UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique Deputy Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, will host a meeting of the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akinci, at the Chief of Mission Residence in the United Nations Protected Area on 26 October at 10:00.

Referring to today’s meeting Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has described it as “preliminary that falls outside the framework of the negotiations.”

The President expects the meeting to help towards the resumption of the negotiations, which is the fundamental objective at this stage of the peace effort, Prodromou added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
