President Anastasiades meets Friday with Spehar ahead of April 16 dinner

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is expected to meet Friday morning with Elizabeth Spehar, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative and Deputy Special Adviser on Cyprus, ahead of his informal dinner with the Turkish Cypriot leader next week.

Spehar hosts a dinner for President Anastasiades and Akinci on April 16 at her residence in the buffer zone. This will be the first time the two men meet after the Crans Montana talks, last summer, which ended inconclusively.

Spehar stated after a meeting, earlier on Tuesday, with Akinci that she will be meeting with President Anastasiades later in the week. Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told CNA that the meeting was set for Friday morning.

Also speaking to CNA, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique said that the Deputy Special Advisor looks forward to hosting the leaders for their informal meeting on the 16th of April and she will continue her contacts with both sides in preparation of this meeting.

Furthermore, President Anastasiades is meeting on Wednesday with the Greek Cypriot Heads of the Bicommunal Technical Committees. According to Prodromou, the meeting has been scheduled a long time ago with the contribution of Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis. The aim, he added, is to reaffirm the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side in continuing with the work of the Committees.

As CNA learns, efforts are underway to set a date for convening a meeting with the President and the leaders of political parties before of the April 16 dinner.

President Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-backed negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem. The latest round of talks took place in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana but failed to yield any results.

UN talks aim at reuniting Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, under a federal roof.
