President Anastasiades’ meeting with UN envoy underway

Jane Holl Lute, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy to Cyprus, arrived this afternoon at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia and is meeting with the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, in an effort to formulate the terms of reference paving the way for the resumption of settlement talks.

The meeting is also attended by Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou, Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, and the Director of the Presidents diplomatic office Kyriakos Kouros.

Lute, who arrived on Saturday in Cyprus, had earlier today a meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci. No statements were made after the meeting in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

The Presidential palace also announced today that President Anastasiades will meet again with Lute on Monday afternoon.

We look forward to this meeting, with the aim of making progress and, if possible, agreeing on the terms of reference. We are ready Prodromou told CNA on Saturday, ahead of Lute’s contacts in Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
