President Anastasiades concludes 3-hour meeting with UN envoy

The President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades concluded on Sunday evening a 3-hour meeting with Jane Holl Lute, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy to Cyprus. Lute made no statements while departing from the Presidential Palace.

The President met tete-a-tete with Lute for the most part of the meeting. Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou, Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, and the Director of the Presidents diplomatic office Kyriakos Kouros also attended briefly in the beginning.

The UN envoy is holding contacts on the island, in an effort to formulate the terms of reference paving the way for the resumption of settlement talks.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
