President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades called for cooperation and invited everyone to work to handle the threats Cyprus is facing and continue efforts to resolve the national problem.
In a written statement issued on Sunday evening at the end of the European elections which, according to unofficial results, see the election of the first Turkish Cypriot candidate, President Anastasiades congratulated those candidates who received the people’s mandate, adding I am sure that they will work together for the interest of Cypriot people.
He expressed his satisfaction for the smooth election process, noting the elections were held in a climate of utmost political civility as it befits a European country.
The President thanked all those who worked for the success of the elections.
At the same time, he thanked those who exercised their right to vote, noting however that it is disturbing that a large portion of our compatriots chose to abstain. A phenomenon that must be of serious concern at Cypriot and European level.
President Anastasiades also said he was pleased with the increased participation of Turkish Cypriots.
The elections are over. From tomorrow what matters is everyone’s cooperation, so that we can efficiently cope with any threats our country faces, to continue efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, and together proceed with the necessary reforms that will make our country worthy of the expectations of our people.
