President Anastasiades calls for a solution that will help the future generations

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said he is seeking a specific structure in the efforts to reunify Cyprus that will result in a solution which will be presented to the future generations.

Addressing the 21st conference of the ruling Democratic Rally’s youth orgnisation (NEDISY), Anastasiades said that this structure will be based on young peoples’ creative qualities, without elements that promote division and cause new friction and tension.

He talked about a solution that will be in line with international and European law, and which would result in a state free from the anachronistic system of guarantees and the illegal occupation troops.

This state, he said, would be able to stand the test of time and would be comparable with European states, will be functional and not an aggravation for Europe.

President Anastasiades said the aim is to build the basis that would lead to cooperation between young people that legally live on the island, whether Greek Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots and we want peace and stability, not friction like in the past”.

This will become possible, he added, when Turkish Cypriots and Turkey realize that we have the right as a state to be independent and to experience what it means to be a normal state. The problems we are facing, he added, are a result of the treaties of guarantees.

President Anastasiades said our effort concentrates on rekindling the hope and resuming the dialogue on the basis of the UN Secretary-General’s parametres, international law and the acquis communautaire. That’s my aim and vision, he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks ended inconclusively on July 7 and all parties involved are in a period of recollection. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reuniting Cyprus under a federal roof.
