President Anastasiades asks for full compliance of third countries with UN resolutions on Libya

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades asked for the full compliance of third countries, acting as destabilizing factors in Libya, with UN resolutions and decisions, during his intervention at the International Conference on Libya taking place in Paris. According to a Presidency press release, he also said that Cyprus was fully aligned with the international community for the immediate end of foreign interventions in the country.

President Anastasiades who participates in the Conference on Libya, at the invitation of French President Emanuel Macron, said in his intervention that the situation in Libya affects first and foremost the Libyan people, but at the same time it has great impact on neighboring countries and regional stability.

The President pointed out that coming from a country that is faced with similar problems of military intervention, of violation of international law and of neo-colonial approaches, he was fully in line with the will of the international community to work collectively to end foreign intervention immediately.

“It is also extremely important”, he continued, “to have full compliance of third countries, which are acting as destabilizing factors, with UN resolutions and decisions, such as the implementation of the arms embargo, but also respect for the principles and values dictated by international law, the Law of the Sea and the Charter of the United Nations”.

He added that a prerequisite for achieving stability in Libya was the withdrawal of all foreign troops and mercenaries from the country. He also noted that holding the presidential and parliamentary elections as scheduled was crucial in order to allow a government with democratic legitimacy to work towards maintaining Libya`s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity.

He concluded by saying that the Republic of Cyprus, as a neighboring Mediterranean country and a Member State of the European Union, remains committed to assist in fulfilling the objectives set out in the Joint Declaration of the Paris International Conference on Libya, which will pave the way for allowing the Libyan people to decide on their own future, free from external interference.
