President Anastasiades and DISY delegation participate in Congress for election of EPP’s lead candidate

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and a delegation of the ruling Democratic Rally party (DISY), headed by its President Averof Neofytou, participate in the EPP’s 25th Congress that is taking place on Wednesday and Thursday in Helsinki, Finland.

The Congress will elect the EPP’s European Commission candidate President and will focus on preparations for the 2019 European elections.

Candidates for the EPP’s lead candidate are Manfred Weber, Chairman of the largest political Group in the European Parliament since 2014, and Alex Stubb, former Prime Minister of Finland. DISY has already expressed its support to Weber’s candidacy.

More than 2,000 participants from 41 countries have been invited to participate in the Congress in Helsinki, out of which 758 have voting rights. The Congress is co-hosted by the leader of Finlands Kokoomus party Petteri Orpo, EPP President Joseph Daul and EPP Secretary General Antonio Lopez – Isturiz.

At around 1930 (Eastern European Time) on Wednesday a debate between Stubb and Weber will take place. The two candidates will also deliver speeches on Thursday. Among the speakers of the Congress on Thursday is President Anastasiades.

According to the programme of the Congress, voting for the election of the EPP lead candidate will take place from 1030 to 1200 on Thursday and the result will be announced at 1300.
