Political parties call on Cyprus leaders to resume negotiations for settlement

The leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties call upon the leaders of the two communities to resume the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement and consider the ideas by UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres to be helpful in this direction.

The participants in the party meetings expressed opinions on the issue proposed by the hosting party, the United Cyprus Party/BKP, Can the framework suggested by the UN Secretary-General Gutteres during the talks in Crans-Montana, provides the basis of a solution to Cyprus problem?

In a joint communique issued after their regular meeting at the Ledra Palace, in the UN-controlled buffer zone, organised by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Nicosia, the participants call upon the two leaders to resume the negotiations, according to UN resolutions, under the auspices of the UN Secretary General, noting that they consider Gutteres’ framework of set of ideas can help towards this direction.

The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties will be held on 30 May 2018 at the Ledra Palace.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
