Pafos prepares to celebrate as it welcomes the Berliner Philharmoniker

Pafos and indeed the whole of Cyprus will have the great honour of hosting for the first time ever the internationally acclaimed Berliner Philharmoniker, in a unique concert that will take place on Monday at noon, at the Castle square of Kato Pafos, marking one of the most special moments of the Programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos 2017.

The concert, which was established in 1991 as the European Concert, takes place in the context of Pafos 2017, with the financial support and collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Embassy of Germany in Cyprus, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the support of the Bank of Cyprus.

The European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 invites everybody not only to enjoy a unique journey into the world of music and culture, but also to exceed geographic and other boundaries. It is in this spirit and context that the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Embassy of Germany, in parallel with Monday’s renowned concert, have created and organised the #UnitedByMusic Youth Orchestra, bringing together young Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot musicians with the musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker, in a unique shared experience which will be presented on Sunday before the official rehearsal at the Castle square, in Kato Pafos.

The chairman of the Organisation Pafos 2017, Christos Patsalides, emphasised the importance of having the Berliner Philharmoniker in Cyprus, saying this is a great honour for the whole of Cyprus, since this is a first for Cyprus. He added that the renowned concert will be broadcast live by the German national channel (A.R.T.) through which millions of viewers will have the opportunity to watch and share the experience.

The collaboration of the Embassy of Germany in Cyprus with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany played a key role in hosting an event of such importance in Cyprus, which greatly upgrades the cultural scene of the island, promoting both the country as well as Pafos, he added.

He thanked the media for their contribution in promoting the ties Pafos maintains with the broader European culture, passing the message that Cyprus does have an artistic sensibility and a real goal to showcase the local and European culture.

The chairman of Pafos 2017 highlighted that this event further strengthens the European culture and the programme of Pafos 2017.

The ambassador of Germany in Cyprus, Nikolai Von Schoepff, stated that it is a great honour to host the concert in Pafos which is the European Capital of Culture, and pointed out that, without the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany and the Embassy of Germany in Cyprus, bringing an ensemble as important as the Berliner Philharmoniker to the country would not have been possible.

He added that the concert has already been greatly promoted in Germany and many Germans have already arrived to Pafos to watch the concert.

The concert of the Berliner Philharmoniker is not just about the importance of the event itself, but also about the importance of promoting the excellent relations between the two countries and showcasing the common European Culture, he pointed out.

What is really important, is not that this is the first time such an event is taking place, but the fact that it brings out the ties and relations between countries and cultures. The European Concert has an exceptionally important place in the international music scene, since, on the one hand, it celebrates the European culture and its values, and, on the other hand, it is associated with the founding of this legendary orchestra in 1882. Each year, the Berliner Philharmoniker chooses a city of historical or other significance to host this event, the Ambassador added.

Georgia Doetzer, the Artistic Director of Pafos 2017, said that this is one of the most important events of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos 2017. The magnitude and outreach of this concert reflect more than anything the values of the Programme of the European Capital of Culture, which is defined by openness, the European Dimension and artistic excellence.
