Pafos Aphrodite Festival opens with “Macbeth” at the Medieval Castle

This year’s Pafos Aphrodite Festival opened with a production by the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and the Ballet Theatre of Belarus of Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth, on Friday evening, at the Medieval Castle.

Another two performances of the opera which is based on William Shakespeares homonymous drama and consists of four acts with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, take place tonight and tomorrow evening.

In an address delivered by Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Minister Costas Champiaouris, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said that the Festival which has been successfully running for 21 years has undoubtedly contributed in enriching and enhancing the cultural and artistic movement and events in Paphos in recent years, while also constituting a special ambassador of the rich cultural history of our country.

The Pafos Aphrodite Festival, he added, having had the official support of the state for twenty-one years has evolved into one of the most popular cultural events in Cyprus, hosting time and again high level operatic productions.
