Overseas Cypriots World Conference upgraded this year, Commissioner Photiou tells CNA

The 19th World Conference of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK-PSEKA) and the Executive Council Meeting of Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) will take place in Nicosia on August 21-24. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will open the Conference on August 21st.

Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues and Overseas Cypriots Photis Photiou has told CNA that the Conference will be upgraded this year and will aim at improving the coordination between Cypriots abroad with Nicosia.

According to the draft programme of the Conference, which will take place at the Philoxenia Conference Centre, the opening ceremony will begin at 1900 local time (16.00 GMT) on August 21st.

It will include a welcoming address by Commissioner Photiou as well as addresses by the President of POMAK Andreas Papaevripidies, the President of PSEKA Philip Christopher, the President of NEPOMAK Antonia Savvides, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for Greeks abroad Terence Quick, a representative of House President Demetris Syllouris and Archbishop Chrysostomos. Following the addresses, President Anastasiades will open the Conference.

On the evening of August 22nd the Central Council of the overseas Cypriots organizations will be briefed by President Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace. Later on Anastasiades and his spouse will host a reception for the delegates.

Delegates will also be briefed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy and Finance on issues of their competency as well as by Commissioner Photiou.

Party leaders or representatives will address the Conference and discuss various issues with the delegates, who will also be briefed by competent public services on the Government Gateway Portal (Ariadni) which enables the use of electronic services (e-Services) that are available by the Government of Cyprus on the internet.

Cyprus Space Exploration Organization President George Danos will brief delegates about the prospects of Cyprus’ industry for space exploration.

On August 23 POMAK and PSEKA elections will take place. Moreover, the Ambassadors of the US and Israel as well as the High Commissioner of the UK to Cyprus will address the PSEKA Conference that will take place on the same day.

Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis is expected to brief the delegates, who will also be briefed on the issue of missing persons by Commissioner Photiou and the Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Nestoras Nestoros.

Moreover, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) and the Press and Information Office (PIO) of the Republic will brief delegates about their activities concerning overseas Cypriots and a discussion will take place about the cooperation between CyBC and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT). Furthermore, delegates will approve resolutions.

On August 24 the Presidents of POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK will give a press conference with the participation of Commissioner Photiou.
