One community imposing its privileges on the other does not lead to a viable state, President says

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said that the demands one community in Cyprus seeks to impose on the other on privileges which are not to be found in any other internationally recognised state, will not lead to a modern, viable and fully sovereign state, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said in a televised message for Easter.

The President noted that he has been conveying the message on every occasion both to the UN Secretary General and during his meetings with foreign officials, as he did this week during his meetings with the Presidents of China and Russia, about the Greek Cypriot communitys determination, political will and sincere desire to reunite Cyprus.

Moreover, he called once again on our Turkish Cypriot compatriots to understand that the unacceptable situation which exists today does not just affect negatively only the one community but both of them.

He said that a settlement of the Cyprus problem must be viable and functional and create conditions for a peaceful future for all the citizens of the country, adding that the unacceptable existing situation continues to be an open wound with all the negative repercussions which this causes.

This is why we are pursuing, through initiatives and new ideas, to create conditions for the resumption of a creative dialogue with prospects for successful outcome, he added.

Referring to his visit in China, where he participated in the Belt and Road forum, an initiative of the Chinese President based on the Silk Road, the President said that the aim of his participation in this Forum was on the one hand to promote and enhance efforts for a Cyprus settlement and on the other to further enhance bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation schemes which Cyprus has developed during the last years with multiple benefits.

President Anastasiades said that he is aware that despite the recovery and the steady growth there are many things that need to be done, expressing certainty that as in the past political parties and social partners will show the same responsibility, with a view to create a modern and effective state that will respond to the expectations of each citizen.
