Number of new voters who register ahead of presidential elections disappointing, Deputy Chief Returning Officer says

?umber of new voters who have applied to register in the electoral roll, ahead of the presidential elections is disappointing, Head of the Election Service and Deputy Chief Returning Officer Demetris Demetriou has told CNA.

The deadline for registration expired at 1700 local time (1500 GMT) on Monday. Demetriou said that according to his estimations the number of new voters who applied is approximately 10.500 from the 40 thousand people who were eligible for registration.

Responding to a question, Demetriou said that the number of the new voters who applied for registration is “disappointingly low”.

As regards voters who expressed interest in voting abroad, he estimated that their number will be 11,500 to 12,000. Voters can express their interest to vote abroad until midnight tonight.

Candidacies for the presidential elections of 2018 will be submitted on 29 December 2017, from 9.00 until 12. 00 local time at Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia.

The presidential elections will take place on January 28, 2018. A run off election is set to take place on February 4, 2018, if necessary.

The main contenders in the 2018 presidential elections are incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades, Stavros Malas who is running as an independent, Democratic Party leader Nicholas Papadopoulos, President of the Citizens Alliance Yiorgos Lillikas and the leader of the National Popular Front (ELAM) Christos Christou.
